Monkey Head Nebula

Designation: NGC 2174
Hemisphere: Northern
Constellation: Orion
Distance: 6,400 light years
Object type: Emission nebula

The Monkey Head Nebula is a peculiar emission nebula, located some 6,400 light away from Earth at the edge of the Orion constellation. This H II region hosts several star-forming areas where new stars illuminate and heat up the cloud to reveal the glowing gas of the nebula.

Radiation and stellar wind from the hottest stars contribute to the formation and shaping of pillar-like structures, and give the nebula its characteristic silhouette, which reminds a monkey head.
