Description

The Southern Pinwheel Galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy located 15 million light-years away from Earth in the constellation Hydra. It is a very distinctive galaxy, with well formed spiral arms, dust lanes, a central bar and strong nucleus.

M83 is one of the brightest spiral galaxies in the night sky and gets its name from the strong resemblance to the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101).
